Tecumseh Community Emergency Response Team
Tecumseh United Methodist Church
July 23, 2011
The Tecumseh CERT meeting came to order at 9:00am. Those present were Herb Whitlow, Neva Martin, Dan and Pat Krug, Steve Vogel, Don Leakey, Jan Kieffer, Dave Sterbenz, Nancy Rush, Barbara and Andrew Watkins, Willa Norwood, Teresa Hudson, Cindy Whitsell, Dusty Nichols, Gerald Cooper.
Teresa has made plans to conduct a children’s activity at the TCERT booth at Heritage Day, September 24. She is planning to assist children in making a “Tornado in a Bottle”. Herb asked her to get him a list of supplies needed and he will e-mail it to members to help collect items. Dave offered to bring a generator that day to power the hot glue gun. Teresa also suggested a trivia game to adults being awarded a small prize. It was proposed to have a drawing for an emergency bucket. The county has a weather-condition spinner which could be used and possible use of a dunk tank.
TCERT is needing to know what part we will play in the Emergency Exercise at Tecumseh Park, October 14-16. Last time the event was held we provided a meal. It was suggested to provide a breakfast on Saturday AM. A grill can be borrowed from Shawnee Heights Fire Dept. If TCERT provides an evening meal it should probably be held on Saturday evening. We need to make a plan and let Dusty know and he will arrange other activities around it. Set up for the event will begin Friday at noon and be in full swing Saturday with displays and demonstrations. Trailers will be set up and several incident sites will be available for participants to practice first aid and rescue skills.
There was discussion about the trailer park tornado shelter. There are about 28 residents at the park and they do not have a safe shelter. Being allowed to use Croco Square basement seems the most likely possibility.
Herb initiated discussion about having programs of some sort for our TCERT meetings. David Brink is our training chairperson and will be consulted. Dusty suggested conducting a program quarterly rather than monthly.
The next CERT training sessions will be held at Topeka Bible Church August 5-6 and 12-13. It will include a Communications unit on Aug. 12. First Aid and CPR will now be included in the training.
Dusty strongly encourages each CERT group to establish a calling tree and practice it regularly. Each group needs to get a primary and secondary contact to him.
Dave needs volunteers for “Ride For Red” on September 10 either at Heartland Park or downtown.
Our next meeting will August 27.
Respectfully submitted,
Nancy Rush
