THE TECUMSEH UNITED METHODIST CHURCH
CHURCH COUNCIL

SEPTEMBER 12, 2010

The Church Council of Tecumseh United Methodist Church met Sunday, September 12, 2010 at 7:00pm. Those present were Pastor Josh Gooding, Ernestine Adams, chairperson, Sarah Gooding, Kathy Griffith, Rita Halderman, Diana Halstead, Nelta Hennessey, Jan Kieffer, Pat Krug, Neva Martin, Virginia Martinson, Jan Mason, Larry McCammon, Willa Norwood, Nancy Rush, Carole Stone, Barbara and Herb Whitlow.

Ernestine shared a reading from Alive Now. The woman writer told a story of juggling balls. Beginning with the ease of one ball and successfully adding another and another – as in doing God’s work. Ernestine closed this portion of the meeting with prayer.

           COMMUNICATIONS
Pastor Josh reported that Annual Church Conference will be held in November. He has received all necessary forms for reporting. The conference format will be similar to last year’s conference.

The Venture Crew scouting unit will meet at the church. Days of meetings yet to be determined.

Diana reported that all paperwork for the charter of the American Heritage Girls has been submitted. They are hoping to get started with a parent meeting just after the first of October.

QUESTIONS/COMMENTS ON COMMITTEE REPORTS
Diana (UMW) reports that Kathy Griffith has accepted a position as a District Officer with UMW.

Rita (Education) will be working on a Children’s Christmas Program.

Carole (Congregational Care) requests that no cookies are needed for visitation on October 10.

Sarah (Evangelism) has been in prayerful consideration of her efforts in this area. She and Josh are inviting everyone to the parsonage on Tuesday, October 12 at 7:00pm. She is interested in receiving input regarding goals and plans.

Herb (CERT) said that the Tecumseh CERT group is purchasing bucket lids and will gather 5 gallon buckets to be sold as emergency supply buckets at Heritage Day for $10.

Kathy (Worship) will meet with her committee on September 23.

          OPEN DISCUSSION
Diana presented the item and made a motion to allow the white tables to be used outside by church affiliated groups. Nelta seconded the motion. It was discussed that Kiwanis will purchase extra leg caps if some become misplaced. During council discussion it was proposed that if the tables become damaged they will need to be replaced. Their use outside should be only by church affiliated groups. The tables need to be labeled and numbered. After discussion, council voted to approve Diana’s motion.

Greeters Plus – there is a need for a group of 5 or 6 people who would make a special effort to greet visitors and make them comfortable. Diana will organize a group to do this.

          PASTOR’S THOUGHTS
Pastor Josh expressed the need for us to take time to pray and think about our vision for our church. Who are we? What can we do better than any other church in our community? What are we most passionate about? It was mentioned that some of our passions are involvement in mission work and wanting to be a church family.

Pastor Josh closed council meeting with prayer.

After meeting, council viewed video of the segment of Five Practices of Fruitful Congregations titled Risk Taking Mission.

Respectfully submitted,
Nancy Rush, Recording Secretary
