Betty Fergola led the devotional time with a reading of a poem written by a former judge. Its message was that the moral people in government need our backing and prayers.
A correction was made to the minutes of the September council meeting. In the fourth paragraph the time of Church Conference should be 4:30 pm. Minutes were approved as amended.
The finance report was reviewed.
Pat (Stewardship and Finance Committee) reported that final plans are being made for the November 11 Stewardship Sunday. A letter will be mailed to all members outlining plans for the day.
Church Conference will be held November 4. Ernestine needs reports for the packet from committees by October 22.
Ernestine shared information she received in an e-mail from the conference office. From three yearly offerings in 2006 (World Communion Day, UM Student Day, Native American Day) the Kansas East Conference contributed $20,545 to the General Board of Higher Education. Kansas East Conference students received scholarships and loans - $43,927 more than we gave.
Virginia (Staff/Parish Relations Committee) reported that the committee had set Pastor Dottie’s total salary at $55,007. Virginia moved to approve the amount, Pat seconded, the motion carried.
Carole (Congregational Care) reminded us that Visitation Sunday is next week.
Betty thanked everyone who helped make apple dumplings yesterday.
Pastor Dottie read a letter from Evelyn Fisher, District Superintendent, and Oliver Green, District Lay Leader, asking for support for Faith and Fellowship in East Topeka. They provide valuable services to that part of our city in the classes teaching English, sewing classes, and a food bank. Pastor Dottie recommended that we make a one-time gift to Faith and Fellowship. Diana moved to refer to the Finance Committee that we make a one-time gift of $1000 . Willa seconded. The motion carried.
Pastor Dottie reported that she will be conducting the morning worship service at Big Springs UMC on October 14. That congregation has an early service and she will be able to be back to us for regular worship time.
Pat and Betty Waller are still working on the church brochures.
Jan and the Trustees Committee will decide what action to take regarding the old brown tables we are no longer using.
Church Conference will be held on November 4 which is our regular Super Sunday meeting date. Council was asked to bring snacks as usual. Any committees needing to meet may do so after conference.
Herb thanked council for their help and support during his service as chairman of council.
The meeting was adjourned.Respectfully submitted,
